Summary Thirteen 12th to 15th century architectural elements--capitals, bosses, columns, and corbels—is juxtaposed with a group of fourteen 19th century vintage photographs from the so-called “Mission Héliographique,” a project undertaken by the Monuments historiques to record French patrimony. The architectural fragments include a corbel probably from Parthenay, a capital possibly from Cluny, a small head of an angel, the head of a woman from Eleanor of Aquitaine Abbey of Nieul-sur-Autise. The photos include works by Henry Le Secq, Charles Marville, and Emile Pécarrère. This exhibition not only offers the opportunity to retrace the allied histories of two media—architecture and photography—it sets up a dialogue, even a certain tension, between the surviving fragments and a reconstituted past.
Catalogue “Pierre à l’épreuve de la photographie,” Rhinoceros Jr., published by Les Enluminures and Les Amis de Clémentine, introductory essay “From the Middle Ages to Medievalism” by Gaia Grizzi, descriptions in French and English.

Summary This exhibition is coordinated with a major international exhibition, “Entre Moyen Age et Renaissance France 1500,” organized by the Réunion des musées nationaux (Paris) and the Art Institute of Chicago. The museum exhibition takes place in Paris (Grand Palais, October 6, 2010 to January 10, 2011) and in Chicago (February 26, 2011 to May 30, 2011). Our complementary exhibition brings together approximately 45 diverse works that include manuscripts, Books of Hours, single leaves and cuttings, coffrets with early xylographs, and stained glass. Among the artists are: Jean Bourdichon, the Master of the Très Petites Heures d’Anne de Bretagne, Jean Fouquet, Noel Bellemare, Guillaume Barbe, and many others. The themes of the exhibition--French Humanism, the Dominance of Paris, the Influence of Italy and the North, etc.—encourage a re-appreciation of the flourishing of the arts at the dawn of the Renaissance.
