| Summary |
This exhibition is coordinated with a major international exhibition, “Entre Moyen Age et Renaissance France 1500,” organized by the Réunion des musées nationaux (Paris) and the Art Institute of Chicago. The museum exhibition takes place in Paris (Grand Palais, October 6, 2010 to January 10, 2011) and in Chicago (February 26, 2011 to May 30, 2011). Our complementary exhibition brings together approximately 45 diverse works that include manuscripts, Books of Hours, single leaves and cuttings, coffrets with early xylographs, and stained glass. Among the artists are: Jean Bourdichon, the Master of the Très Petites Heures d’Anne de Bretagne, Jean Fouquet, Noel Bellemare, Guillaume Barbe, and many others. The themes of the exhibition--French Humanism, the Dominance of Paris, the Influence of Italy and the North, etc.—encourage a re-appreciation of the flourishing of the arts at the dawn of the Renaissance. |

| Summary |
The History of stained glass starts with Man's quest to get closer to light.
The stained glass exhibited here reflects both the continuity and diversity
of works produced using this marvelous technique, from the Middle Ages until
modern times. In the 12th century, Suger, abbot of Saint-Denis, formulated
an aesthetic theory of the symbolism tied to light used as a means of
evangelization and memorization of biblical history, like the angels
exhibited here attributed to the master glazier John Thornton of Coventry.
Stained glass is also found in abundance as ornament in public buildings,
commercial structures and private dwellings, especially in the 15th and 16th
c. In the Renaissance, workshops that dealt in stained glass developed
considerably, with works signed by the artist and no longer necessarily tied
to a given architectural support. In the 19th century, collectors,
art-dealers and restorers reworked stained glass inherited from the past:
panels were extracted from their original context and were mounted with new
leading to create pastiche compositions. This is the case of the "Starry
Sky, " likely attributable to F. X. Zettler. By this time, stained glass
compositions were assimilated to monumental. It is in this spirit that Paul
Albert Besnard created his "Portrait of a Young Woman" in 1869. Today,
artists use stained glass to invent new modes of expression. The work by
Hans Gottfried van Stockhausen displays his mastery of old techniques and
demonstrates the inspiration medieval forms had on this timeless art. |

| Summary |
Thirteen 12th to 15th century architectural elements--capitals, bosses, columns, and corbels—is juxtaposed with a group of fourteen 19th century vintage photographs from the so-called “Mission Héliographique,” a project undertaken by the Monuments historiques to record French patrimony. The architectural fragments include a corbel probably from Parthenay, a capital possibly from Cluny, a small head of an angel, the head of a woman from Eleanor of Aquitaine Abbey of Nieul-sur-Autise. The photos include works by Henry Le Secq, Charles Marville, and Emile Pécarrère. This exhibition not only offers the opportunity to retrace the allied histories of two media—architecture and photography—it sets up a dialogue, even a certain tension, between the surviving fragments and a reconstituted past. |

| Summary |
This exhibition explores an infrequently treated topic from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: the subject of Time in daily life. A wide range of more than 30 objects are organized according to different conceptions of time: Units of Time, Time and Man, The Celestial Spheres (Heaves and Time), Chronological Time, Cyclical Time, and Telling Time. For example, a medieval calendar from a Parisian Book of Hours with the Labors or the Month and the Signs of the Zodiac illustrates the passage of the months of the year. A manuscript of the Rule of St. Benedict, which regulates the recitation of the Divine Office by monks and nuns eight hours a day, is included, along with a statue of St. Benedict. Chronicles and genealogies show chronological time, while pilgrimage documents suggest the conception of cyclical time, the changes of generations marked by the coming of Christ and the Last Judgment. A bell, a candle, and an image of an astrolabe remind us how different methods of telling time were in the Middle Ages, in an age before clocks and cell phones.

| Summary |
"Roman to Renaissance: A Private Collection of Rings" is an exhibition devoted to thirty-five rings dating from 300 to 1600 AD. The collection comprises rings from the Merovingian, Byzantine, Medieval and Renaissance periods including marriage rings, seal rings, stirrup rings, tart mould rings, iconographic rings, merchant rings and gemstone rings. The collection was formed over twenty years by Sandra Hindman, owner of the gallery LES ENLUMINURES. Starting with a small French private collection, she has assembled a coherent group that represents the highpoints in the history of the ring from the Late Antique period to the end of the Renaissance, including key examples of museum quality. |

| Summary |
“Pen to Press / Paint to Print”: these catchwords draw attention to the co-existence of manuscript and print culture in the age of Gutenberg, the focus of this exhibition and catalogue. It brings together 42 diverse works that include manuscripts with inserted prints, Parisian printed Books of Hours, late Gothic and Renaissance coffrets, early xylographs and illuminations, unpublished woodblocks, and drawings and engravings. Most of the objects treated here are previously unknown, and many interesting interrelationships emerge from the present grouping of material. |
