Crucifixion with Mary and John (260 x 155 mm)
France, Loire Valley, c. 1550
A GRAND CRUCIFIXION SCENE CHARACTERISTIC OF 16th CENTURY FRENCH RENAISSANCE ART
This imposing Crucifixion typifies the Renaissance in France in the sixteenth century. A monumental figure of Christ hangs on the cross, before a backdrop composed of a lush distant landscape and impressionistic cumulous clouds. On either side stand the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, their bodies deliberately distorted in manneristic poses. A cartouche bearing an unidentified emblem is at the bottom of the scene outside the frame.
