Two Initials with Moses (90 x 116 mm. and 88 x 124 mm.)
France, Toulouse, c. 1500
RARE DEPICTION OF THE OLD TESTAMENT PROPHET MOSES FROM A CHOIR BOOK
These two cuttings with historiated initials come from a single French Choir Book from Toulouse, painted around 1500. They offer two differing depictions of the Old Testament prophet Moses. In initial ‘L’ shows Moses with horns, an attribute of the prophet, facing a younger bearded man who gestures towards him. The initial ‘M’ shows the head of Moses with rosy features and elaborate beard, opening a chant “Moy[ses]….” Depictions of Old Testament prophets in Choir Books are rare.
