STYLE OF THE MASTER OF COËTIVY
Descent from the Cross, The Three Living and Three Dead, Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, and Martyrdom of Saint Denis (each c. 108 x 69 mm.)
Tempera, gold leaf and liquid gold on parchment
France, Paris, c. 1460-65
These four miniatures are important survivals from an unidentified Book of Hours but with a known sister leaf. The miniatures opened prayers for the Office of the Virgin Mary, the Office of the Dead, and the suffrages of Saint Sebastian and Saint Denis. Each is richly decorated in blue and gold with illusionistic gold frames accompanied by charming two-tone initials painted on phylacteries. These miniatures are innovative their treatment of each subject, with a delicate rendering of facial features, costumes touched with liquid gold, and the deep, atmospheric landscapes.
