PAIR OF FEMALE SAINTS
Textile (20 x 19 cm ; 19.5 x 18.5 cm.)
Alsace (?) or perhaps southern Germany, late 15th century
Perhaps Saint Helena (left), wearing a crown and carrying the True Cross, and another female martyr (right), holding a martyr's palm, these two fragments were once part of a larger tapestry closely related to Alsatian, Rhenish, and Swiss examples. Only 51 Alsatian tapestries survive. For similar facial features, crowns, and hair, compare a tapestry of the Madonna and Child with Saints (Nuremberg).
