Ornamental Fragment with a Grotesque Mask
Description
This charming, unpublished fragment survives as an element from a vertical Renaissance border, the head of a “monster” with two fangs coming out of its mouth and below with foliate decoration in grisaille and colors. The grotesque is unusually fully, and finely modeled with a combination of bold cross-hatching and stick work.
