Clothes and social status go hand in hand – then as well as now. Arguably however, fashion played an even greater role in defining social and professional roles in medieval and Renaissance societies. This is particularly true of urban centers, where the diversity of city dwellers accounted for the noticeable differences in dress and accessories.
