Paintings from Illuminated Manuscripts

Exhibition June 24 to July 2, 2021. (By appointment only)

Les Enluminures: One Magnificent Mile, 980 North Michigan Ave., Suite 1330, Chicago 60611.

This selling exhibition brings together twelve manuscript illuminations by a number of significant painters. The wide-ranging and diverse group includes important examples from countries including Italy, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Bohemia.

From France, we are pleased to reveal two dazzling leaves from a manuscript of Francesco Eiximenes’s Livre des Anges, a treatise that describes the properties and characteristics of angels. Painted by the important workshop of the Master of Coëtivy, these skillful depictions of angels and demons are filled with poetic fantasy. Moving to Italy, we present a graceful Nativity by Don Simone Camaldolese, one of the most celebrated Tuscan illuminators in the last quarter of the fourteenth century. Whilst from Spain, we include a spectacular and grandiose representation of the victory of the Archangel Michael over the Dragon and the forces of Hell by a follower of Juan de Flandes, court painter to Queen Isabella I of Castile (r. 1474–1504) and her husband, King Ferdinand II of Aragon (r. 1479–1516).
