Where does fire come from? That is one of the questions in this, the most lavishly illuminated copy of an important text from the Middle Ages, The Fountain of All Science, or Sydrac and Boctus. A dialogue between Sydrac and Boctus consists of more than 1,000 questions. Few copies are extensively illustrated. This one, with twenty-seven pictures on thick gold leaf, must have been made for a figure at the Royal Court, in around 1300 in Northern France, Flanders and has had an illustrious history.
